Suddenly cut off from the established ties of the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance (Comecon) in the late 1980s, victim of an intensifying United States embargo, and marginalized from the international financial markets, the Cuban government was forced into reforming the country's economy. This involved changing any number of the its established social norms.
