The Caribbean constitutes a unique entity in world historical terms. Historically, the region is a new society, brought into being by the forces of an expansive European capitalism. As CLR James has pointed out, this makes the Caribbean and its peoples an integral part of modern society. Recent debate about globalization and its impact on the region has brought to the fore the fact that the Caribbean is no stranger to global economic and technological forces.
