The main economic activity during the twelve months prior to the 2001 Census was 'working for pay or profit'. 73% of the population aged 15 years and over fell into this category. This was the case for both men and women. 80% of men said that they were economically active compared to 66% of women of working age. While the proportion of women who are economically active has grown considerably from 34% in 1974 to 66% in 2001, men reached a peak of 82% in 1992 and have declined to 80% by 2001.
